The French Camp Elementary School 2020-2021 teacher of the year is Mrs. Tami McKnight. Mrs. McKnight began her school career in 1st grade at French Camp Elementary. She says that the influence of stellar teachers such as Polly Allen, Becky Rogers, and Terry Stacy firmly shaped her decision to become an educator. She joined the Choctaw County School District team in 2008 as a 2nd grade teacher at Ackerman Elementary School for one year. The next year she came to French Camp Elementary where she has taught 1st -5th grade ELA and self-contained classrooms, 7th and 8th grade girls’ PE, 8th grade science and been the reading interventionist and a Beta Club sponsor. In her five years in 3rd grade, she has seen the implementation of the 3rd Grade Reading Gate test and shared in the success of her students with a nearly 100% pass rate. Mrs. McKnight is in her first year of teaching 1st grade at French Camp Elementary. She has successfully made the transition to 1st grade, and she is doing a phenomenal job closing the gap which was made after the students were out of school for five months due to Covid-19. Mrs. McKnight believes that reading is vital to student success in school and beyond, and she is passionately committed to ensuring the reading success of every student that she has the honor of teaching. Mrs. McKnight says that each year she has been shaped and stretched as a teacher and a person by the students she has been privileged to spend the year with, and the 2015-2016 school year was no different. During that year, two DHS foster children came to be a part of the FCE family and were in her ELA classroom. She says that through the Lord’s leading and mountains of paperwork and red tape, she and her husband became foster parents to them in May of 2016. In December of 2017, their adoption was finalized and they became a family of nine. The process of working with DHS and children in the system has opened her eyes and heart in a whole new way to the unique needs and circumstances of the students in her care, and shaped her into an educator who genuinely treasures not only the minds of children, but their hearts as well. Mrs. McKnight says that being selected Teacher of the Year by her family at FCE is such an honor and the Lord has used being part of the Choctaw County School District to shape her life and the life of her family in ways she never would have imagined. Pictured with Mrs. McKnight is Mr. Shane Burton, principal of French Camp Elementary School.

The French Camp Elementary School parent of the year for 2020-2021 is Mrs. Sherry Curington. Drawing from a love of children and an affinity for hands-on projects, Mrs. Sherry has made numerous visits to the FCE kindergarten class this year and led students in several educational activities. Mrs. Sherry’s projects have included making lemonade for the letter L, constructing homemade paper for the letter P, and manipulating “Rapunzel Hair” out of sugar for the class fairy tale unit. The students love when she comes to visit, and they have learned many things from her this year. Mrs. Sherry, her husband Mac, and son Jacob, live in Winona, MS, and they are currently in the process of moving to the French Camp community. Mrs. Sherry’s daughter, Crystal Ray, teaches kindergarten at FCE, and her oldest granddaughter, Kinley Kate is a Pre-K student at FCE. Mrs. Sherry also has a second granddaughter, Kambrie, who is 2 years old. Thank you Mrs. Sherry for all that you do for students at French Camp Elementary School! The French Camp Elementary paraprofessional of the year is Heather McIntire. She has been a teacher assistant at FCE for three year. Choctaw County School District is where her education began. She started school at Weir Attendance Center in kindergarten and graduated as salutatorian of the first graduating class of Choctaw County High School. She says that Choctaw County Schools have played a vital role in her education and she intends to make the same impact on the students that she has today. She says that each student that she has had the opportunity to work with holds a special place in her heart and that it inspires her to watch them learn. Mrs. McIntire is kind and compassionate and treats her students as she would her own. She actively seeks to make them not only better students but better people. She goes above and beyond what is expected of her as an assistant. Her students love and respect her. Mrs. McIntire jumps in wherever and whenever she is needed with a smile on her face. She has a servant heart and it shines daily as she works with our students and staff. She says that it is an honor to be the FCE Paraprofessional of the Year. Pictured with Mrs. McIntire is Mr. Shane Burton, principal of French Camp Elementary School.

This afternoon we had a few issues with our Chromebooks and internet accessibility. We are preparing the devices to safely work away from campus and ran into some unexpected problems in doing so. If your device is still unable to connect to any websites, the device policy needs to be updated. Typically this is done in 3 hours or less, but if it still has not updated, contact your school to arrange to have the device updated locally. Very sorry for the inconvenience. #KeepChargingForward

The flu virus is picking up steam in our state. Here are some ways to keep yourself and your family healthy during this peak flu season 1. Take the time to get your flu shot! 2. Wash your hands often with soap and water. 3. Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough. 4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Remember how germs are spread! 5. Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.

FLU tip of the day😊: The flu virus is spread mainly by droplets made when someone with flu coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the nose or mouth of people standing nearby (yuck!). This is why it is very important to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze (we’ll talk about that in a few days). Symptoms of the flu include: fever (usually high), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and/or chills. Flu symptoms typically come on suddenly. Next week our focus will be on ways to prevent the flu and what to do if you get the flu☹ Have a great weekend and stay weather alert!

FLU tip of the day: The BEST way to protect you and your family from the flu is to get a yearly flu vaccine. Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. If you’ve not already gotten a flu vaccine, it’s not too late! You can get a flu shot from your local doctor, health department, and many pharmacies offer them as well. Protect yourself and your family. Get vaccinated! Stay tuned tomorrow as we discuss signs and symptoms of the flu and how it spreads from person to person.
